I just used a router to clear a portion wide enough for the Sawzall to get in, then used it to make a horizontal cut to left and right to clean out the entire rebate. Tips: I used a cordless Sawzall with a fine-tooth blade (hacksaw blade works fine) to cut the angles on the tops of the legs (a radial arm saw won’t make angles that fine) and to make the first angled edge cuts for the rebating.Īlso, I didn’t use the multiple cut and chisel method for cleaning out the rebates. A total of 50,965 tons of pulmonary, lachrymatory, and vesicant agents were deployed by both sides of the conflict, including chlorine, phosgene, and mustard gas. The first full-scale deployment of deadly chemical warfare agents during World War I, was at the Second Battle of Ypres, on April 22, 1915, when the Germans attacked French, Canadian, and Algerian troops with chlorine gas.ĭeaths were light, though casualties were relatively heavy. Germany used another irritant, xylyl bromide, in artillery shells that were fired in January 1915 at the Russians near the town of Bolimów, nowadays in Poland. One of Germany’s earliest uses of chemical weapons occurred on October 27th, 1914 when shells containing the irritant dianisidine chlorosulfonate were fired at British troops near Neuve-Chapelle, France. The French were the first to use chemical weapons during the Great War, using tear gases, ethyl bromoacetate, and chloroacetone. The Hague Declaration of 1899 and the Hague Convention of 1907 forbade the use of “poison or poisonous weapons” in warfare, yet more than 124,000 tons of gas were produced by the end of World War I. The attack forced two colonial French divisions north of. The canaries were used to detect poisonous gas, and cats and dogs were trained to hunt rats in the trenches. a wave of asphyxiating gas released from cylinders embedded in the ground by German specialist troops smothered the Allied line on the northern end of the Ypres salient, causing panic and a struggle to survive a new form of weapon. Horses, donkeys, mules, and camels carried food, water, ammunition, and medical supplies to men at the front, and dogs and pigeons carried messages. However, animals remained a crucial part of the war effort. Horse and camel-mounted troops were used in the desert campaigns throughout the war, but on the Western Front, new weapons like the machine gun made cavalry charges increasingly difficult. ![]() In 1914, both sides had large cavalry forces. For years few knew of the unimaginable suffering of the beasts transported across the Channel to the Western Front. This is the forgotten tragedy of the Great War – a conflict that pitched as many animals into the line of fire as it did humans. Of the million British horses sent overseas to help with the war effort, only 62,000 returned home. Horses were equipped with gas masks over their muzzles and were protected from inhalation of poison gases such as phosgene.Įquine eyes were not affected by lachrymatory agents so that their masks consisted only of specially made nose bags but, unfortunately, these animal’s eyes were vulnerable to the effects of chlorine and vesicatory gases. Natural disasters of the magnitude of Hurricane Katrina are known to exert significant mental health effects, with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) being the most studied and reported consequence. As a result of the storm, over one million people in the New Orleans metropolitan area were displaced, and all residents of New Orleans proper, an estimated 455,000 people, lived under a mandatory evacuation for 33 days. 1, 2 A series of levee breaks in New Orleans associated with the hurricane led to widespread flooding covering 80% of the city, an area of approximately 120 square miles. Hurricane Katrina made landfall just southeast of New Orleans, LA, on August 29, 2005, resulting in one of the worst natural disasters in US history. The strong relationship between displacement from ones’ pre-Katrina residence and symptoms of PTSD suggests a need to focus resource utilization and interventions on individuals living in temporary housing. ![]() Given their key role in the economic redevelopment of the region, there is a tremendous need to identify those in the workforce with symptoms consistent with PTSD and to enhance treatment options. A significant burden of PTSD symptoms was present 6 months following Hurricane Katrina among a large group of adults who had returned to work in New Orleans. Despite universal health coverage and the benefits of an employee assistance program for all employees, only 28.5% of those with PTSD symptoms had talked to a health professional about the events of Hurricane Katrina or issues encountered since the storm. Predictors of PTSD symptoms in a multivariate-adjusted regression model included female sex, non-black race, knowing someone who died in the storm, not having property insurance, having had a longer evacuation, a much longer work commute compared to before Hurricane Katrina, and currently living in a newly purchased or rented house or in a temporary trailer. The prevalence of PTSD symptoms was 19.2%. Participants included 1,542 employees from the largest employer in New Orleans. To determine rates and predictors of symptoms consistent with a diagnosis of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in New Orleans residents following Hurricane Katrina, we conducted a web-based survey 6 months after Hurricane Katrina made landfall. On August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina made landfall resulting in catastrophic damage and flooding to New Orleans, LA, and the Gulf Coast, which may have had significant mental health effects on the population. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() With that, you’ll understand why you don’t need a meringue to complete it. Likewise, this filling is far more rich and luscious than its American cousin (it’s a French tart, after all), with a generous amount of butter in it too. It holds its shape, but is far more soft than in the other lemon pies you might have encountered. The crust gets baked on it own, before being filled.Ī custard is indeed the proper way to describe the filling. You can also prepare the dough the day before and keep it refrigerated for up to 24 hours. Take into account these chilling times when you plan on making this lemon tart. My version of it includes a small portion of almond flour, for sweet nutty notes that balance perfectly with the tangy lemon filling.īecause a pâte sucrée contains quite a lot of butter, it needs to be chilled twice for at least 2 hours before rolling-it out and at least 30 minutes once rolled out in the tart shell, before baking. A pâte sucrée is a sweet, crumbly French pastry (a little more crisp, and less sandy than a “ pâte sablée”), which is usually used for tarts featuring cream or custards. The ideal crust for this lemon tart is what we call a “ pâte sucrée”. You can use a store-bought pie crust if you wish but as I always like to say that making your own crust from scratch will go a long way. Make sure you read the following cooking notes, and you’ll be set for success! I have had my fair share of too-sweet or too-tart lemon tarts in my life… enough to motivate me to create this lemon filling that to me, is the perfect balance of flavors. A proper filling: luscious and tangy, but not too sweet nor tart. And as with many French desserts, I like to say that making it isn’t very complex – but it has to be done right! A proper crust: buttery, crisp and not too crumbly. ![]() With that being said, the original French “Tarte au Citron” is meringue-less, and simply allows the bright yellow filling to shine on its own. Of course, you can find both versions in French bakeries (with or without meringues), and I would even say that you will find more meringue-topped lemon tarts nowadays, as they’re probably more eye-catching. Unlike common perceptions, a classic French Lemon Tart (Tarte au Citron) does not traditionally feature a meringue top. It’s bright and sunny, while still making the best of these citrusy winter fruits. This is a perfect dessert to transition from Winter to Spring. A must to have in your baking repertoire as a French host(ess). That is all you need to recreate this utterly iconic French dessert: a Classic French Lemon Tart. Use a small, sharp knife to cut out a round 2 inches greater in diameter than your tart or tartlet pan. Lightly dust the top of the dough or the rolling pin with flour as needed, then roll out until the dough is about 1/8 inch thick. Lift the dough and give it a quarter turn. On a lightly floured board, flatten the disk with 6 to 8 gentle taps of the rolling pin. Or, use the round to line a tart pan and wrap well. To freeze, place the dough round on a 12-inch cardboard circle and wrap it well with plastic wrap. Make-ahead Tip: The dough can be made ahead of time and frozen for up to one month. Use the dough immediately, or wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate until well chilled, about 30 minutes. Transfer the dough to a work surface, pat into a ball and flatten into a disk. Nut dough variation: Add 2 tablespoons of ground toasted pecans, walnuts, almonds or hazelnuts to the flour mixture and proceed as directed. Add the egg mixture and beat just until the dough pulls together. The episodes that explore their pasts aren’t intended to provide a detailed roadmap to understanding what makes these people tick. They’re principally noir archetypes (Spike = tough, detached loner with a heart of gold, Faye = femme fatale, Jet = good cop spurned by a corrupt system, and Ed = um… never mind). Watching the series this time around, however, I found the backstory episodes to be some of the show’s best.īebop’s protagonists are not that deep. I felt they were slow-moving and full of boring exposition instead of space explosions and cool kung fu and gunplay backed by swingin’ jazz. I last watched Cowboy Bebop at least fifteen years ago and back then I was specifically against the Jet and Faye backstory episodes. Oh, and this list will absolutely spoil almost all the major plot points of the series. Keep in mind, of course, this list is my own completely subjective opinion, which is why it is the definitive Top 10 Cowboy Bebop best-of list and there shall be no false top ten lists besides it. But, that said, it’s got its dull moments too, so, these ten episodes will do, if you’re busy (though I’d still very much recommend watching these in chronological order). Cowboy Bebop shows its age only in minor, superficial ways and is worth a full watch. That said, every episode has something worthwhile in it: a gorgeously animated fist and/or dogfight, a scene beautifully synched to Yono Kanno’s incredible soundtrack, or just a moving character moment. ![]() Look, I love Cowboy Bebop, but if you haven’t watched it in a while, there’s more filler in there than you remember. So, technically speaking, blasphemous though this may sound to fans, if you’ve never checked out the anime, just watch these ten and you’ll be getting all you need. Even episodes that delve into the backstories of protagonists Spike, Jet, Faye, and Ed before their time together on Jet’s ship, the Bebop, mostly function on their own. It’s also not an unreasonable proposition because, unlike a lot of anime which is serialized throughout, the majority of Bebop episodes are standalone adventures. However, with news of Netflix doing a live-action remake, why not whittle down this quite limited series to its ten best episodes (or “sessions” as the show calls them)? The shop fix is specific to the shop fronts, it wont change the way walls are divided up like that. Of course, the problem with either idea is that some things will break (doors, shops (though they are already broken, I guess), etc.). Alternatively walls should not be part of rooms. However, it seems to matter now, so I am curious: does the eventual solution to the problem with shops change this in general? Or will walls continue to be part of a room? and will the assignment of walls to rooms continue to be fairly arbitrary?įor what it is worth, I have always felt that it would be better if the boundaries dividing rooms ran down the middle of a wall (so, in the example above, the left half of the wall would be in the shop that currently works, and the right half of the wall would be in the shop that doesn't work). Since it has been largely cosmetic until this update, I haven't mentioned it before. Xander wrote:Icepick: the way that walls are assigned or not assigned to a room as been an issue that has irritated me for a very long time. It had no internal walls and shared with no other room types. Now just make sure you have the shop staffed (workers) while able to have customers (free time)! I'm not sure if it was the one I placed first but it was the lower-rightmost, which seems to fit in with the intelligence I've seen while building foundations (they always go down and right). It's rather a shame my initial idea of having 3 fronts didn't pan out - they always went to the same one, creating a jam. Subsequent shifts also occurred as expected. I then bulldozed the squares in front of the Shop Front, removing the foundation, and the next shift had someone on the till and prisoners once again stampeding. Without any further modification, no-one ran the desk and the whole thing seemed like a waste. I encountered the same thing when trying to reposition the front to prevent a bottleneck occurring on the path (those prisoners are ravenous!) by simply building an indent into the wall. So yeah, not ideal, but if you are having trouble with this you know how to work out which walls will work for you now.įrom what I can tell, the Shop Front cannot face a foundation. If that's no good, you can try experimenting with adding and removing walls to try and get things divided up how you want it, but unfortunately I don't think there's a concrete method for that which will work in all cases. Your best bet is simply to pick a wall inside the correct area and you shouldn't have any trouble. ![]() So, that's how you can tell a shop front will or won't work in a given location. If you put the shop front there, it won't work - prisoners won't work it and so no one will be able to buy from it. You can see that the middle wall isn't in the same highlighted area as the shop here. However, if you use the other half of the building: Putting a shop front on any of the walls here will work just fine. ![]() ![]() ![]() So, in the ideal case, you'll want something like this:Īs you can see in the deployment view, all 4 of the walls are inside the same area as the shop itself - when you highlight the area, the entire thing is selected, walls and all. I'll try and explain it a bit, and how you can try to get things working until the next release. Yeah there's unfortunately an issue with the shop front detection that was missed in our initial testing. ![]() ![]() From eye-catching paint jobs to bold body kits and custom interiors, these enthusiasts transform their cars into one-of-a-kind masterpieces.Īt tuner car shows, you’ll witness the ingenuity and skill of car enthusiasts who have turned their passion for cars into a form of artistic expression.
